I need to swap out my primary o2 sensor (aka A/F Ratio sensor). Never done it before, seems simple enough.
but as per the service manual the job calls for a special tool, SNAP-ON YA8875 or SP TOOLS 93750. or equivalent.
is this a money grab? or will any one of my dozens of wrenches and tools do just fine to twist that fucker out.
I have removed them many times with an adjustable wrench. The special tool they are referring to looks like a deep socket with 1/8th of the side cut out. It's made like that so the wires from the 02 can go out the side of the socket and not get damaged. When the 02/exhaust are older and rusty it's harder to get it out, you shouldn't have a problem though. Worst case scenario is that you cut the old 02 wires at the sensor and use a normal socket to get it out. You can then install the new sensor carefully with an adjustable wrench....... OR, I could just lend you my 02 socket if you want.......

I assume they are universal, ie will fit all types of sensors.
You need a 22m wrench. I have a variety of modified wrenches to fit in tight spaces. Don't bother with the Princess Auto parts as they almost always spread and round the wrench pads. The snap-on tool probably isn't the one pictured - I've been drolling over one that locks like a wobble head socket but has a c-shaped part that goes around the wrench pads. I just can't afford it :(

Just snap off the glass head of the sensor and use a real socket, prevents rounding it over and fighting with it...
Use some sort of wrench for installing the new one.

step one - get a cheap socket that is the right size
step two - take a grinder and cut up the side until it looks like the snap on one.
done and done

just a little update.
Princess auto has the sensor socket for $7.99. The funny part is that my uncle that works for snap-on pissed himself laughing when I told him where I found the socket because his best price is $89.99.
now I know why some Mechs are billing at $60-80 an hour :)

Afew years of rust, mud, and shit...a wrench wont evan budge it...
Leverage my good man, wrench with another wrench with a pipe, it's do-able. Might safer with a socket and impact though.

I use a 22mm wrench and also soak the threads with some liquid wrench or PB... for me the front is tougher as I had to drop the headers but rear 02 is super easy.

Dude, I actually have a low-end o2 sensor socket, I think i paid 25 bucks for it. It's completely useless. It will only open up and strip. Maybe it's good to install the sensor and torque it.
I use a 22mm wrench. I have a set of flank drive plus wrenches. Those wrenches don't open up on the open end :D Mind you I paid just under 600$ for 10-19 and 21-22.
Don't know if you are in the orleans area, I might be able to snug that sensor off for ya.
ps we charge 97$ an hour at GM.

thanks for the offer dude, but the socket I have worked like a charm. fit the sensor perfectly and didn't strip it when I torqued the new one in place.
the only problem I had during the whole job was trying to disconnect the plastic clip.
