View Full Version : Daytime Running Lights
On my eclipse the headlights never really turned on by themselves as daytime running lights are supposed to. In fact I got pulled over one night because my headlights weren't on- just didn't thurn the knob one more click. but anyways this leads me to question how the eclipse passed the inspection when importing the car over from the states.
my main question is this:
the headlights or HID's do not come on but only the orange parking lights come on in my car. Is this enough to pass RIV inspection?

I think the rule for day time running lights are that, the driving ligthts should be powered on 60% or 80%.
I might be mistaken though.

Not sure if this helps.

I read that somewhere too, but i was hoping i could get away with just the parking lights. I can't seem to get the daytime running light module to work properly with my car

hey man!
you can run your fogs on your DRL circuit instead of headlights, unless they are HID's too?

the headlights are HiD for the low beams
and halogen for the high beams.

high beams @ 60% for daytime runing lights and you are ok.

Canadian s2000's use the hibeams at 60% for the DRL's.
That set of rules says you are allowed to have DRL's that are optically combined with turn signals. You should be ok.
Dodge Caravans have orange DRL's right?

true on all mentionned above.
hmm.
as per section 44,45, 47 i can see that the way i have the lights wired up does conform to the standards.
the color of the parking lamps are actually amber ( yellow ) when i originally thought they were orange so that makes me even more pleased.
thanks for the help!

Running lights aren't good enough.
Hardwire the low beam lights to come on when you turn the ignition to the full on position. End of story.
Should be less than 1hr labour at any shop.

hmmm, yeah, I've got no daytime running lights at all. I can rewire my fogs so I can have them on during the day I guess, usually they can only be turned on when headlights are on. And I dont especially want to drive with my popup headights up all the time....
** edit - However, anyone know what year the grandfather clause kicks in? My car is an Ontario-original car, sold by dealer in Thornhill, ON in '88. So when it was introduced, obviously DRL's were not required?

My HID's are wired to come on with ignition on my STi - pretty simple wireup.

DRL's are required only on vehicles that come from factory with them...
if you have an older vehicle with no DRL for ex: you dont need them.. the gov' is expecting those vehicles to rott off the road eventually

I got my 94 accord from the states and to get it to pass they used a wire in the fuse box to make them come on until the inspection was over. So i'm guessing you need them for saftey when your doing all the paper work to register the car in canada.

Started being standard equipment in 1990 for Canadian spec vehicles. not sure which month. Most 1990 Hondas had a bastardised way of meeting this rule. They simply turned on the low beam and parking light circuits when the car was on.
So Onin, got it figured out?
Most ewer Dodges have an interesting way of doing it with the bumper lights. I forget how it's done but it surprises me everytime.
I am probably just going to do what 97gst suggested.

When I installed my HIDs, I had to get a bypass so I ended up hardwiring my low beams to my ignition.. took about 10 minutes..
