View Full Version : Speedo goin' wonky - Honda Civic

Speedo stays stuck around 27 km/h, regardless of speed... Then all of a sudden booooing reads normally.
Shut the car off
Restart
Goes back to 27km/h.... Repeat.
Is this the sign of a common problem in the Honda world? Are these cable driven like old speedo's? Or some kinda electric stuff? Car is a 98 civic DX w/tach and has an Si transmission.. Does the speedo cable (if there is one) attach to the tranny? Could that be the problem?)
I doubt it's a problem with the cluster, the car has only 150kms ...Especially since Honda's don't break...riiiiiiiiight?

I had a similar problem with my 98 CX - but it was an automatic.
Underneath the intake manifold, there is a bracket that attatches manifold to the block - a brace i guess. There is a wiring harness that runs along that bracket. Inside that harness is a bunch of wires, one of which controls the speedo.
That harness had become chafed from rubbing on the bracket and it was shorting that circuit. Check your fuse panel for any blown fuses. Mine was also the same fuse for the alternator - I was lucky I found the problem and siliconed up the exposed wires - the alternator was not charging, and eventually I would have died on the side of the road.

Thanks, I'll check it out asap.

Difference is my speedo was jumping all over the place, not just staying stuck in one place. Also the shifting patterns of the auto tranny were all over the map, sometimes not shifting. Was really weird.

Knowing what year of Civic this is would kinda help....

Interesting. For some reason to me it seems like more of a mechanical problem. When slowing down (when it's stuck) the needle kind of wobbles (like an old mechanical gauge). Also, 27km/h is parallel to the road surface.. So it kind of rests at the perfect angle... :? coincidence?

if what sexy Lexi recommended doesn't work, replace your VSS
...I had to replace it in my EK and it's fairly common...can go from it being stuck to it bouncing around sometimes...do a search on H-T, common problem with that gen

I dont show a sensor like the above pic, its a gear at one end, plug at the other, I need to know if its a nippondenso or a matsuishita denshi or something like that

Chances are you dont have to order a new one, you can simply take out the old one, check both connectors for corrosion, give them a good spary with a brakes cleaner or a electrical cleaner. You actually dont even have to take the old one out really, you can reach down and spray it but its easier to take out.

It's probably just corroded at the connector...
There's a wiring harness that attaches to it, you *should* be able to access it directly, it's right on top of the tranny closer to the back.
Just unclip the harness and look for corrosion...
It's probably pretty expensive to get a new one, surprisingly I don't have a spare

dude.
do not waste money before you diagnose the problem.
i had the exact same problem.
it was definitely not the vss. i tested the car with a new vss and it did the same thing.
it was the cluster.
and this is a common problem.

I had this issue too on my red car, I lived with it for about a month, the first week it was bouncing, and the 3 other weeks, it just read 0.
until one day.. it worked again. like magic :) never worked again.
thanks jdm jesus

I'd be suprised, but I'll take it form someone who knows :P

with the 3 honda's ive owned ive had the problem with two of them..
one was the cluster. and the other was the VSS.
i diag'd those by luck.. the first time i had a spare cluster sitting around. so i swaped it and everything was good after. the second time i had a vss sitting around and everything was good after! lol!
lucky me!
but seriously. see if you can get someone with an extra cluster to throw in to see if anything changes? quick swap! before you drop cash on a vss
if the extra cluster works then buda bing , buy it ;)

Shit sorry to hear dre. Well least RL crew is helping you out. Goodluck withthe gauge problems shoudln't be hard to diagnose.
+1 for gauge cluster. I replaced just the speedo gauge out of the cluster and it solved the problem. Mine would wobble back and forth betweed 20 and 40 when ever moving.
