So I picked up this new project car. Catch is, it has to be completely reassembled by June 20th for a federal inspection.

That means completely put back together with a structural safety (which also means working airbags and no engine lights), regular safety and etest.

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n165/95ttht/project/gutted2.jpg

The car is completely gutted, pictures as it sits as of tonight. There is no interior, no wiring, and no engine. I do have pretty much all the major parts. As you see it, I've got about 10hrs worth of work into it. I figure there is another 100hrs of work needed to complete. I can only work on it evenings and weekends.

Place your bets!

very do-able but shitty.
Speeding things up can lead to mistakes. Mistakes can cost lots of money.

wtf are you building anyways?

but that's assuming you have all the parts.. and don't have to wait for anything, we all know what happens then.

If ur not respraying it, then you should be fine... Otherwise factor in a few decnet days of work fro paint.

No offense but i would 'clear up' primer, then rockerguard the floorpanels or somehting, it doesnt look to healthy IMO..

Ur car though, and GL.

Oh i voted yes.

Picked up paint today, I'm reshooting the engine bay on Saturday. Once it's painted, it's coming home so I can work on it faster.

Yes, interior will probably get a coat of rockerguard to keep noise down.

I've never seen so much wiring before. What a mess. This isn't even half of it, that's just the dash harnesses.

Im also going out on a guess that the engine has a single, FMIC with the piping after the FMIC is cut through where the battery was, and obviously relocated to the rear of the car. I'll also guess an after market intake mani ?!?!? Just guessing here, but the battery is relocated and the hole is pretty clear its for the charged pipes.

I bought the blue car as a rolling chassis. The previous owner had an engine fire due to somebody doing a hack job on the wiring. The drivetrain I'm using is from another car.

Here is the car "pre-fire". It should look the same when back together, except I'm ditching the F&F front bumper and it will be wingless when I'm done with it.

Amazing work so far!! Is it just you doing all this?

Evolution Tuning in Gatineau designed and installed the single turbo system in the "donor" car. They did fabulous work, and really I'm just "moving" their setup into this blue car.

Tapp designed and installed the fuel system and tuned the AEM. This setup made 627whp. Again, I'm really just moving parts from one car to another, all the credit for building the drivetrain goes to others more skilled than myself.

So far, all the work on the blue car I've done myself, including the painting of the engine bay. I did had a friend help with the actual engine/tranny removal and reinstall just because it's a two man job and he has a hoist and cherrypicker :)

I'm probably hitting the 50hrs mark at this point. Probably another 50hrs left, and only 8 days left. Probably 15hrs+ left in wiring alone. The entire rear end and in-tank fuel systems need to be swapped, exhaust fabricated, brakes switched from NA to the larger TT calipers, etc...

clutch and brake pedals back in.
intercooler/piping in.
airbags/sensors/wirng in.
lots of little stuff that won't show up in photos.

97gst
06-17-2008, 10:13 AM
Yes, but I cheated. ;)

I got an extension on the june 20th deadline.

However, technically the car would have passed the federal inspection even as of now. All they need to see is:

bilingual airbags labels (car had it already)
baby seat bolt (in the glove box)
functional airbag, if equipped (done)
daytime running lights (should be done tonight, just hardwire the lights to come on with switched power).

Sure, it would have had to have been trailered over, but it should have passed the mickey-mouse inspection.

I'm getting temp plates on friday, hopefully I can take it for a test drive this weekend. Only the fuel pump and fuel line is stopping the car from running now (in theory).

Hard to get motivated to work on long term projects in the summer time...

Finally got around to swapping out the rear end from the 5 speed to the 6 speed this weekend.
Long story short, the driveshaft/axle/rear ends are different for the getrag. Big PITA job when you don't have a hoist or a 2nd man.

Doesn't really look any different in the before/after, but it's another thing crossed off the list.

6speed pumpkin

http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n165/95ttht/project/rear-1a.jpg

the old setup (5 speed non-turbo rear end)
http://i112.photobucket.com/albums/n165/95ttht/project/rear-1b.jpg

output shaft from getrag is a 4 bolt not 3 bolt, and the bigger trans means shorter driveshaft. Otherwise I would have left the old setup alone and tackled this part over the winter.
