Honda has a scheduled reminder built in to tell you that you're due for maintenance. Now I believe it just flashes for a while, then after X num of KM it stays on permanently, until you take it in, do the regular maintenance, and shut the light off by pushing a sequence of buttons.
I did the oil change myself, ignored the light when it came on (it's at the right interval for service). It's on permanently now. Everything seems ok, but what I'd like to know is... IF I turn off the light (because I did the service myself), and the light was on for a DIFFERENT reason, and not simply to remind me of the maintenance, will it come back on? Or is there a way, other than taking it to a shop and looking like a fool, to find out if something's wrong.... seems to be driving fine.

Turn the key to the off position and then hold the select/reset button, turn the key to the on position (do not start the car) holding the button for about 10seconds or the light goes out. Try that!

thats what i was going to say, Its a reminder and when your dealer services your car they should reset it but honestly, most dont so they go back and get charged extra, sad but true :S

I spend all day in dealerships and mechanics and body shops etc....most DO NOT do that.

Thanks for the input guys.
What I am curious about is IF i do this, and it's NOT just my regular service, but is rather something more serious, will the light come back on, or will it stay off, therefore I neglect to have it looked at, and perhaps cause more damage.
The maintenance required light is exactley as it states. It's just an oil change reminder light. No damage will occur to your civic. I've worked for honda, and I have never seen anyone charge to turn off a maintenance required light, nor any other dealership I've worked for. Do as MrFixIt say's, with the key in off position, press and hold the tripometer reset button, then turn the key to the on position, but don't start the car, hold the button until the light turns off. I used to get about a dozen customer's a day with that same concern. It's nothing to worry about.
