So, I've a Compustar DSS alarm/starter in my old Intrepid. The remote is pretty banged up, but works.

I'm getting rid of the Intrepid and very likely getting a VW Jetta (standard). I've been quoted $620 to get my existing unit moved over, or $799 to get a brand new unit installed.
Apparently the new units have better range, and I'd be getting a new remote. Both are bonuses.

Question is, is there anywhere cheaper than Derand that might be able to move my existing unit for less than an arm and a leg? and if not, is there anywhere cheaper to get a new unit?

Maybe Compustar isn't the way to go? (can't say I have any complaints about the unit I have though)

wow dont bother taking it out. most places will install a new one for cheaper. also depends on which new car you get some you have to bypass the ignition and such.

if its a 2000 and up volkswagen your gonna need to get a valet key and a bypass modual...and its gonna cost over 500 to get it installed just becuase its a wiring nightmare....when i worked at future shop in calgary i did one and took 8hrs to do. $400 in just labour and no parts

Meh, if I were local I'd do it for 200 labor. Then 35 for the transponder bypass and you'd have to provide another VW key to be used in the bypass module. All in all much cheaper than 650 lol. That quote is rape. VW's aren't that bad to work with. I've done much much worse. The worst thing on that car is the independent park lights right and left, but that just needs a couple relays and diodes to enable the use of the +12v PL output on the starter. No biggie.
