Man, this car was the shiniest car I've ever taken pictures of. At times, even the camera was confused! If anyone needs a car detailed, Paul is the man to go to!

Were you using a tripod or monopod for the last 2 pics?

I noticed the slow shutter speeds (1/5 and 0"6) and I get 100% blur any time I do that; so is there some kind of trick to it?

I believe it not a monopod nor a tripod used in the last two pictures.

It is a "rig" that attaches to the vehicle.

It's a rig shot. Google it to find more info.

The key to not getting any blur is to push the car in neutral, rather than driving it to eliminate engine vibration which translates into blur in your photo.

Here's one I did of my car a LOOONG while back, before I moved to Ottawa.

You can notice my feet behind the rear wheel from pushing the car (I was wearing white sneakers), but no blur or vibration since the car is shut off:

Not NEARLY as slick or complex as Kevin's pics, but same basic idea.

Anyway, this is GTPAUL's thread.... fucking sick sleeper! And great pics Kevin!

Well considering I have a car mount myself I'm pretty sure I know what they look like.

I'm just saying; I've seen Mani's shots and a few others; but none far away like that.

With my setup, you can make it as far as you like. You can't give a definite answer on how far the camera should be away from the car because it will differ from lens to lens.

The camera was about 3ft away from the car.

The problem is the farther away you get, the more re-enforcement you need to stabilize the weight of the camera (a big consideration, especially for a dSLR, which get pretty heavy with their lenses).

Think about it as a fishing pole. You have one end attached to the car, the other end is a camera, and then all that weight is suspended on one point, usually fastened by suction cups or bungee cords. It's not easy to rig up so that it's steady. If you have say a 1lb camera at the end of a 10 ft pole, its relative weight will be much more than 1lb. IE: It will feel much heavier than it is. This translates the same on the car. All that weight has to be secured to the car without any damage to the car. It's very difficult to use bungees or suction cups and keep that much relative weight steady, unless you're lucky enough to bolt it to something.

Keep in mind, the farther out you go, the more unstable it becomes because of wobble from the actual rig, since the relative weight increases the farther out you go.

If you want to get any farther away than 3-5ft, you need something very strong. This is why my photo is only a few feet away, because the weight made the rig touch the ground. For this shot, the camera was literally a centimeter away from the ground due to flexing. It was the best I could do.

You can't buy a rig, to the best of my knowledge (correct me if I'm wrong). It's up to the photographer what they want, how much weight it needs to hold, how far it will telescope, etc.

It's very hard to get farther away than a few feet without serious materials. So I'm a little curious what you have that allows you to go as far away as possible.

Also it takes an awful lot of post-processing in Photoshop or whatever to remove the boom from the picture.

There's a lot of work that goes into those motion shots.

At least that's my limited experience working with these kinds of shots. Kevin can come in and blow my post out of the water :P

You can buy rigs from several Film making companies, but the price is quite steep. That is why a lot of the people make their own rigs.

I don't think anybody would say exactly what their rig looks like and how it is made.

They don't, trust me. I've done a fair bit of research on it, and photographers are generally very protective of what they use to earn their bread and butter.

As for rigs you can buy, yeah they are usually pretty expensive. I've seen some that are used for movie productions, that involve huge booms, and camera platforms mounted on wheels with liquid dampening systems to eliminate vibrations, etc.

Been into it for quite a while, I've been looking into rigs since '04. I've only seen 3 to 4 photographer who actually don't mind talking about it. I've talked to Wynn Ruji about this and he's helped me out, great great guy.

But then again it is said to be a "trade secret"...

Most of the times, it's not really convenient to push the car... I guess if you have 3 guys it's possible, but 90% of the time, it's just me and the car owner.
