I have a set of universal door locks that I need installed. I already have a viper alarm system in my car, so I would need these door locks to run off the alarm remote. Any suggestions on where to bring it? Anyone on here who can do it? Seems fairly simple (I read through the very brief installation guide), but I'd rather not screw this up. Let me know guys!
if theyre 2 wire, its not as simple as it looks... shawn at sar should be able to set you up...

I think Hammer from this board had some issues with SAR recently when getting an alarm installed. Not sure what the whole story was, but I've heard a mix of really good, and not so good stuff about SAR.

I'd be curious to know what the story was, I've had a good experince there, and so has my father...

Like I said...I don't have any personal experience, so I'm not gonna bad mouth them. But I'd like to hear some feedback from others before bringing any work there. Although this should be a fairly straight forward, 1-hour quickie job for someone who knows what they are doing.
i'd do it for a case of beer... but i am not in ottawa this weekend.... i will be in a few weeks if you still need it tho...

I've installed a few sets. Fun part is doing a clean install on the wiring between the door anc chassis.

Any interest in doing another install?? PM me with info like price and time you'd be available. :D
4sc...thanks for the offer. Let me know when you get back in Ottawa in case I haven't put them in by then.

umm viper alarms usually require you to add relays for the lock and unlock.
pm me if you need a hand
i have done quite a few of these.
probably 20 cars at least.
going through the door isa bust but the only way it should be done
all door lock installs require relays... different amounts depending on what type they are... the most common form of aftermarket door lock actuators, are 2 wire, i which case you will need 2 relays (4 if you use the drivers priority unlock) and you'' need to wire them in reverse polarity fashion... the diagram is scary, but not too hard to do...

Hmm...you guys are making it sound much more difficult than the installation instructions would have me believe. They mention nothing about relays. And it's 4 wires on the driver's lock, 2 wires on the passenger.
boostedd15b - sending you a PM
that gives control so that you can push one up and down, and control both...
also will support drivers priority unlock i believe...

Ughgh...nobody is available in the evenings. My weekends are busy, and I want these things installed. I WANT THEM IN NOW! Anyone have any ideas where to take it for an evening appointment? Anyone feel like doing this tonight?

future shop
I actually had them install my viper alarm system. So I gave them a shout. They want the car for 4 hours in the evening (tonight from 5-9). IMO that's far too long for a shop to take to do this job, and I have somewhere else to be by 8pm.

4 hours seems fair...ive never done it, but I could see two hours a door, especially if your getting them to wire them to an existing alarm...

Apparently it's not that far off. Most places were quoting 3 hours - 1.5/door. I really didn't see it taking that long, but then again, I've never done it before, I was just guessing by the instructions.
Called SAR, but he's a no go until next week. He can do an evening job, so if I still don't have it done by then, I'm gonna book an appointment.
Pearl is only open til 6pm, Derand til 6pm, Goldwing doesn't do it anymore.
Any other places you guys could recommend? I'd really like to get them done tonight (I know...short notice).

Are you kidding me? Do you want the install to be a hack-job?
IMO, you're the worst type of customer to work for...
A) You dont want to pay jack shit
B) You continue to discount the install as "ohh its easy"
C) You dont want the intall to take much time
D) You probably expect the work to be top notch as well
FYI, the install is not as simple as it looks. Ever taken a look at the wiring that goes to your door? If you did, you'll notice it's a plug, so you need to drill out a section of the plug in order to install the wires through. As mentioned before, you also need to use relays to drive the actuators. Any other method will most likely fry the lock/unlock outputs from your alarm.
If you want a halfass install, I'll offer to do it for 20 bucks. Unfortunatly, it will probably work for about a week... I wont run the wires through the door grommet, they'll just be run randomly through your door jam. I wont solder any wires, cause that takes too much time. Also, I'll leave the relays dangling by your pedals, its too much work to fasten them up neatly. But hey, it'll be installed just like those easy instructions say!

Gear down there big truck...
A)I never said I didn't want to pay jack shit.
B)In my posts I have continuously pointed out that I have no experience doing it, and I was under the impression (BECAUSE OF THE INSTRUCTIONS) that it didn't sem that bad. But in my last post I agreed that it was obviously more difficult then I originally believed.
C)I also agreed that 3 hours seems to be the norm. So I was right when I said 4 hours seems excessive.
D)And yes...I expect top notch work...because I never said anything about how much it would cost me. I'm always willing to pay for good work.
Look! I can make lists too! Does this make my post look more official?! I hope so!
Thanks for comin out though cupcake. You made my slightly slow afternoon at work a little more exicting (but not much).

This is all funny stuff...I do honestly appreciate the humor.
But now I need some actual help. I know it's hard to find here on RL, and sarcasm and e-thuggin is way more popular. But does anyone have any actual suggestions? If not, disregard this post and carry on with the antics.

Althought Hammer had issues w/ SAR they've got a pretty solid reputation... IMO you should wait til next week and have it done by them.

Ya it seems as though that will be where I end up. Mostly good stories, and he seemed super friendly and helpful when I talked to him this afternoon. Have to wait til next Wednesday before calling him. He's working on a big job, but said he will want to take a break from it, so he may be able to get me in there next Wed night.

Thats a sweet list, buttercup.
Take a look at our post times. Yep, you beat me by a few seconds and you clarified some things that make my post look redundant. Good on you that you realize this isn't as simple as you thought. Before that, you kept mentioning how it shouldnt take very long (which means it shouldnt cost much right? sorry, that was my assumption)
Meh... carry on with your thread
