First off, what is the car?

Easiest way is just drive up to the boarder will all paper work complete and insurance and so on. They'll bitch about you not sending it earlier but oh well. Pay the taxes, transfer under your name and do the regulation changes to the car.

The correct way is inform the US boarder and Canadian boarder. Send stuff in so they can back ground check and blah blah blah. Sorry, forgot the website but just search on the custom boarder websites.

it's a CRX...

I thought there was more paperwork involved, but that sounds simple enough, Thanks Mehdi

No problem. If you want to transport it instead of picking it up, you'll have to get all the paperwork lined-up before hand. I brought a couple over no problem. Just make sure if you're bringing it over, you're driving it across. The car has to cross the boarder on it's own and not on a trailer.

When I tried to import a car from the states, the US border said they must recieve the paperwork 3 business days prior to showing up to the border with the car in question, otherwise it won't go through. I called 5-6 border patrols and they all told me the same thing.

Something to keep in mind if you don't want to go back and forth for nothing.

yes, a bunch of guys in the subie club have imported new and used cars, you need to make sure the border has the paperwork 72 hours before you cross.

for paperwork I assume the title

now is a title of the current owner good enough? so if I get the guy to fax it 3 days before I leave...when Ig et there, and we do the switch over, is that gonna be good enough?

or do I have to go there, sign it, and then he has to fax it?

title as it is currently is ok, they usually want the original and two copies of it... sometimes they will let it go without the original.

Yeah,

My dad just tried to bring a parts car over, it's nliek 40 years old..

Couple years ago we did the same thing, just stopped at the US border, they stamped the ownership, went to the Canadian border and they said run along and all was well.

This time he tried the same thing, they wouldn't let him cross and he ahd to leave the car in Ogdensburg for 72 hours, we're picking it up on Friday...

So do your research...

You can't fax the title to the border patrol. You have to send them the original one or they won't take it. Either you mail it to them, or drop it off in person, and come back three days later with the car.

It's a huge pain in the ass.

Best way is to call them because you have to cross the particular boarder where you sent in your paperwork. They also want the car history from the DOT.

just got off the phone with the border people cause the RIV wont deal with it (over 15 years old)

-go there sign it over, get a temp permit
-I gotta get the documents over to the US patrol as usual 3 days in advance
-once that's approved, I go over to the canadian customs, do the form1 and pay my fees
-drive it back, do a safety+etest

at least she made it sound that basic...we'll see when we get there...I am trying to gather up as much info as I possibly can

They need the originals at the US customs and copies. So you would have to send in the original title.

ok seems everyone I talk to says something different...this is quite confusing
from the looks of it, it's gotta go down like this
-get ins for the car
-drive down, get the title
-go to DMV and get a temp with the insurance
-drive up to the border
-give us customs my title, wait 3 days
-after 3 days, take the car to the cdn side, fill out the form1, which acts as a plate until I get it plated
-get the car inspected
-safety+etest
-plates
-whoop mani's slow ass, broken mustang cause he's a douche bag

am I missing something?

might be easier to get it shipped here... depends where you are going to pick it up, hotel, food, gas, time, take everything in consideration.

I hear ya, but the thing is I am pretty much crashing at CRX people's house all the way back...

so leave here, drive it straight (15 hours), crash at the guy's house...next day drive 7-8 hours, crash at someone's place, next day drive it back...

now I just need to find out who in the middle will let me sleep at their house...haha I got a buddy but he's too close to indiana

Bring a tent, and book a camp site
could be fun and relaxing at the same time!

for the the car history that shows there are no leans, and extra on it to show the US customs. Make 3 copies of each document to hand in with the original. Besides that, I think you're set.

Don't waste your time or money for a CRX. You won't save enough to make it worth the hassle.

I meant find one locally, nothing wrong with the CRX in general...

out of everyone on the board I wouldn't expect a generic/unfounded comment like that from you

with the exchange rate these days, the fact that rust free CRX are a dime a dozen as apposed to here which 90% of have had bodywork done, alone makes it worthwhile, let alone needing to mention what I paid for what...

if it wasn't worth my time, I wouldn't be bothering with it

well i just imported a 240sx from virginia this week....if the car is from the US and its older then 15years all you gotta do is pay taxes/duty on it and then 100 bucks if its got ac. pretty simple

i just drove the car to the border, showed them the title signed over to me and the bill of sale and paid my fees and off i was back home. took 20 mins max.
