Em took off on a cruise and she left the keys to her 2002 Mini behind... :) Neither of us liked the orange tach and speedo lights so I decided to "play".
All said and done it took about 4h to remove and disassemble all of the parts and solder in new LEDs. I also had to change the current limiting resistors. The cluster still isn't bright enough but I'll adjust that a little when I get some brighter LEDs for it.

Never tried. There is a very good chance that I could. How much, depends on how long it takes. If I had to bill someone to do the mini I would need to charge about $200.

Still a very reasonable price for such a custom job! Looks cool.

I could go for a colour change in the Rex as well... Hate that mundane green that came with it

Go to the scrapyard and pick up a used unit. I don't mind "trying it out". With Em's car I checked first to see what it would cost me if it didn't work out. The replacement clusters are about $100 from the scrapyard for her car.

Actually the uniform orange lights on the BMW dashes are proven to be effective for safe driving.

Pop in to a BMW dealer, and try to get a hold of the BMW Experience DVD.
It has 4 parts.

And in the Design part they talk about why they use the uniform orange for dash lights.
I was also present at Chris Bangle's seminar in 2003 about his designs and etc... They talked about the dash lights in the presentation there as well.
Not trying to bash your blue lights, but I thought I'd pop that little info in there.

Yep... orange and red are suppose to be the easiest on your eyes as rumor has it.

did this a few years back on my civic. I chose red LED's and it turned out sharp.
I don't like it, rather be uniformed than 2 different colors, the stereo still has some orange/reds and the tach as well, but good job.

I was curious to know if it was a german carmaker thing but I was in a VW the other day that had a blue dash.

The tach is all blue now. I'm just out of LEDs. I'm also looking at the clock in the headliner and the buttons on the steering wheel. I might take another crack at the stereo but it is sure to be a time-consuming job.

I would be surprised if anything is more difficult than zee German engineered Mini. I just ordered about $200 of LEDs to do a few more dashes. I'm fairly sure I could do an infinity as well.

Wow the people who designed them are your 'source' for why they are so good? That's like asking a GM Engineer why their cars are sooo good....
Not saying they aren't - in all the cars I have owned, I prefer the red/orange dash lights, but there has to be more sources then the ones who designed/installed them.
