View Full Version : How to splice/strip wire without cutting it?

Hey guys,

Just wondering if you had any tips/techniques on how to strip a wire without actually cutting the wire in 2. The wire is already connected on both ends so i don't have a free end where you can simply just strip it using a typical wire stripper.

I've heard some ppl say to try using a lighter but there are other wires close to it so I'd rather try something more "safer".

Any ideas?

Thanks!
Danny

you can buy the plastic things that will tap into the wire and your new wire attaches to it.

Hmm not sure exactly what you mean. Maybe I wasn't to clear... I have an alarm that was already installed on my car but they didn't hook up the power locks so I'd like to hook up the 2 wires needed.

I could just simply cut the wire I need in my car and then hook up all 3 together but I thought a cleaner install would be better. Here's a pic of what I'm trying to accomplish:

and then i'd simpy attach the 3rd (alarm wire) to the revealed wire.

slice the plastic off in the middle of the wire with a sharp knife or razor if you don't have a wire stripper that can take the plastic off in the centre. Solder up the wires and then seal it up with heat shrink tube if you can slide it in one end otherwise tape it up and be done. I hate using those T-taps personally myself.

If the wire is easily accessible I'd just strip away the insulation carefully with a sharp knife and solder it. If you're having to do it upside underneath the dash that option isn't the greatest.

True, solder to the face can suck!

There is a tool that grabs, strips and stretches the coating on the wire, leaving you a 'gap' that you can solder to.

I have the tool, no idea what it's called. Any electrician will have one in their belt.

looks like this:

I just use a pair of cutters. But, I used to strip wires for a living, so you might fuck it up. All you do is take the cutters squeeze the wire enough so its not going anywhere but not enough pressure to cut the wire...then just pull...that will cause the insolation to break. Make sure you don't increase the pressure on then cutters when you pull.

dont use those scotchlock taps... theyre just gonna be headaches down the road... i would just cut back about 1cm of shielding... if you want an awesome connection, separate the wire in half ( so it looks like the eye of a needle) then thread your new wire in there and twist around, solder that and it will never come apart...
