We decided to try painting the beater with Tremclad. I have a friend did it to his car and it turned out pretty good, and the more I read about it on the net the more intrigued I got.
We had some spots that were pretty rotten, typical honda rust. The hole was filled with expansion foam lol and then covered with bondo. Considering myself and my boyfriend have no previous experience in body work I'm pleased with how it turned out. It could have been smoother but w/e its better than rust.
We used "semi gloss black" tremclad, bondo, spray primer, sandpaper and foam rollers cost me about $100 for everything
Here are a few pics I snapped on the way and during the process! Enjoy!

i have some buddies that have done this. yours looks pretty good! Although looks like you got a bit of orange peel there, but im sure a lil wet sanding would get rid of it.
thumbs up!
clean, when you putting a k20 in it?!

Its not bad but you can smell it. The bondo was a stronger smell!

Got the paint at Canadian Tire its Tremclad "Semi Gloss Black" its just rust paint. A gallon was 39.99 and I only used 1/3 for 3 coats. I found a write up on it and they say to do 2 layers then wetsand a week later and do another 2 coats then wet sand and another 2 coats and it should look like real paint. I plan to wet sand the car after the winter and touch up the small imperfections and paint it again. We used small foam rollers and large ones. The small rollers dont leave as much of a mark on the paint( it looks like orange peel) we did 2 coats with the small roller then one with the big roller and the big one's effect doesnt look as nice as the 1st 2 coats. For next time I would use the big roller to get the 1st layer on nice and thick, then use the small rollers for the next few layers that has a softer edge. Overall Im really happen with the colour and result.

when i did my integra, all the "gloss paints" seemed to come out more like a flat black. What gives? who do people get the finished product to look glossy?
looking to pick up another project maybe in january, and if i can't afford the body work after getting the mechanical stuff organized, id attempt another body job.
you said rollers...like rollers that look like paint rollers? (rollers that are used to apply paint to walls, kind of rollers? lol)
thanks!

did you guys sand down the whole body? or just wash, fix up the rust areas with sanding and bondo, then paint right over the original paint with no primer?

You can now sell it for 4 grand on UO as "Freshly Painted, No Rust"

I sprayed primer on the spots that I put bondo on. I read that you dont have to use primer cause the tremclad had something in it that acts as a primer, but Id recommend it cause i missed a few spots that should have had primer and they didnt come out as nice.
We scuffed the whole car lightly with these sanding pads so the paint would stick.
The rollers were regular painting rollers but they were made of foam. They are suppost to leave less marks when you roll than the normal ones.

Thats not to bad!! paint looks like it has a lot of orange peel but you can wet sand and put another coat and wet sand it again and should be good!

Thanks for the nice comments guys! Ya unfortunately the roller left marks that look like orange peal, but I think it looks good! Ill try wet sanding come the spring but its fine for kicking around for the winter. looks 100 x's better than before.

if you ever do the tremclad thing again, you can spray it through a paint gun by mixing it 50/50 with thinner i believe.
ive seen it done both with a roller and a gun tho.

If it's a beater, leave it like that. Who cares about orange peel?

That came out great.
Little bit of orange peel in some spots as you know, but for 100$ it is really hard to beat.
And you are right about the primer, no need to go over it! The properties of the paint are somewhat 'bonding' on whatever surface you use it for, but then again that's just tremclad; its good stuff! You could have but so much more work for nothing really.
Great job. :)

i painted a trampoline frame 50/50 with thinner the paint comes out really nice and is a lot better looking then brushed/rolled on.
