My friend use to have amps/subs in vehicles while still keeping his factory head unit. I know going to an aftermarket h/u would probably improve sound quality and be easier along with probably a arms length of other advantages but my questions to the pros here are:
-Is it difficult to hook up RCA pre-outs to a factory h/u?
-Costly?
-More specifically is this possible to do on a 2007 Impreza?
The amp also requires a "remote" wire. I guess you would hook that up to the accessory wire?
I think I'll just go book an appointment with Shon but just wanted to know if this was going to be possible first...
theres the good way and the cheap way....
the cheap way can be hand built with about 20c worth of wires or purchased for 10-20 bucks...
downsides: muttering and voice noise and other crappy noise comes through the subs
the good way is systems like the mtx req, jl clean sweep or rockford 3sixty
expensive, but sounds like hooking up subs to an aftermarket deck... this is only really worthwhile if its going to be really expensive to put an aftermarket stereo in your car.

future shop has the piece for rca preouts for amps its 17 bucks
hey buddy! Heres the deal with factory head units, most new cars have an equalization curve built into the factory head unit so when you turn the volume up it drops the base, the reason they do this is to save money on warrantying factory speakers and to make the factory systems go louder.
The draw back is if yu add an after market sub, the factory EQ curve makes the output unpredictable (lots of clean base at mid volume and muddy over exagerated base at hgh levels, here are your options...
-most after market amps have speaker level or high level inputs.we can run speaker level right into your amp, this is what we normally do everyday
-if your amp doesnt have a high level input you can run a LOC (line out converter) the factory EQ curve can still be a problem with this
-my personal favourite is run a product called Re-Q.http://www.reqsound.com/
this gets rid of all the factory EQ settings and puts out a flat response with an 8 volt pre-out for subwoofers
any questions just PM me and ill help you out

Like anything, your system wil only be as strong as it's weakest link. Feel free to call me or stop in for advice. Its all free, except the beer.
