I just put a different (used) deck in my car, and when there is a small popping or thumping sound from the rear speakers only, when changing a song or turning it on of off. The sound is the same as when you test the polarity with a 9v battery, and once the song is playing, everything is alright.

Any ideas? Possibly a bad ground?

Hey buddy. bet ya have an amp in your car, either factory or aftermarket.
The most common reason is an indifferental ground plane. (the negative speaker inputs are showing a resistance compared to the amp ground)
Tell more about the car/system.

Hey Shon, thanks for the quick reply! It's just a panasonic head unit with four aftermarket speakers (6" MTX, 6x9 Pinoeer), no aftermarket amp (and it's a 96 civic).

I just took a different deck out of the car and there were no sounds, so perhaps there's a problem with the deck?
