So the GF is seriously thinking of buying a Tuscon, we test drove the 4cyl. and the 6cyl. I hated the 4 banger, it felt like it had zero power and that the SUV was kind of chugging along, the V6 felt super peppy. I also liked the Shiftronic thing, but it would be kinda useless in the city. We were really impressed overall but we are now looking for comments from people that actually own them. The other thing that we really like is the 5 year warranty and how affordable this SUV is compared to the RAV4 and the CRV. We check the JDS(could be wrong) consumer report and Hyundai is ranked pretty high in quality and reliability.

Thanks for any input.

I drove a Sportage a couple times (same thing). I agree, the 4-banger is pretty lame, and IIRC doesn't have much better fuel economy.

Overall I thought it drove nice for what it was... They're all over the place so that says something. Be prepared for shitty resale though :S

A friend of mine and her parents walked away from a crash on hwy17 Sunday driving a hyundai Tuscon.. The whole front end was split in half right up the middle
(small SUV did its job in my opinion) The two front only had scratches from the air bags and the passenger in the back sprained her thumb from grabbing the seat in front i'm guessing

My parents walked away after being T-boned in their Sportage by an Astrovan. If "it's the same" like Andre says then that's gotta be a plus.

Personally, I really like trhe look of the V6 Tucson. Nice size, subtle look, great looking rear with the dual exhaust. It's also a nice height and looks pretty roomy. The SUV in geenral doesn't look hard to handle either in traffic, tight parking spots or offroad. I'd definitely test drive one if I was in the market.

A friend of mine picked one up about 1-2 years ago. Everytime I see him I ask about it, and he has zero complaints. He hasn't had a single problem with it so far, and he loves the drive, and how it performs in the winter (with winter tires of course). The only time he's had it in the shop was for oil changes and regualr maintenance...nothing random breaking down. And like you said about the warranty, even if anything does go wrong, it's covered.

I've noticed a big change in Hyundai's SUV's. I'm still not a big fan of their cars, but the SUV's seem to be really doing well and have a good reputation. I should also mention that his parents have had a Sante Fe for about 4-5 years, and that's what lead him into buying his Tuscon.

Personally, I'd say go for it...for the price difference, and the quality that seems to be there lately, why not?

Cool. I always thought they looked the same, didn't know Kia and Hyundai had a partnership going. You learn something new every day.

I rented a Tuscon last summer. Drove it to Toronto, Rochester NY, and back to Ottawa over the course of 4 days.

no complaints. if I recall it was good on gas, and had a nice feel to it. Smooth ride aswell.

Tucson is not a RAV4 / CR-V competitor the Santa Fe is. The Tuscon is a super small SUV, it actually is just a jacked up car.

I compare it to the Pontiac Vibe / Toyota Matrix, believe or not they are almost identical in size.

Just an FYI. Nothing wrong with the Tucson but check out it's competitors.

If your leaning towards the V6 Tucson (@ $26,395.00) I would spend a couple grand more and get the CRV LX 4WD @ $29,700. I think you would be better off in the long run with resale, and reliability.

LMAO.. V6 with equal warranty and 0% financing. Yeah, I can see how the CRV is leaps and bounds ahead of this vehicle. You Honda owners really gotta venture outside of your lawnmower brand once in a while.

Resale doesn't mean much when you have to spend 5-6 grand more on the Honda. There's your resale right there.

Never Personally owned one, but I've had a few friends own both the Santa Fe (she drove it for 4 years without a single issue, ended up trading it in on a new one and to this day hasn't had a single issue) & the Tucson (they havn't had it for a long time, 1 or 2 years but they love it, really good on fuel economy, they came from a Grand Cherokee to this and wouldn't go back).
They were both the v6 models and I was quite surprised with the quality and how they drove. I do have to agree that Hyundai has made huge jumps in quality & safety over the years, personally I think that a lot of people overlook them cuz of their older products. IMO, They are just as good as a Honda but a lot cheaper.

my ex gf'smom has a hyundai sonata (i know its not a tuscon) but theonly thing that happened to it was the side moulding on the door came off in the witer after a car wash.

They came to her house and fixed the dame thing took all of 2 minutes. I am impressed with the warantee as well.

Well i own a 2004 santa fe and have driven the tuscon. Both handle like cars without the massive body roll of other suvs in corners(The santa fe is built off of the sonata platform). Gas mileage is comparable in both. the biggest difference that I have noticed is that the tuscon has less initial cargo space than the santa fe. And no Tach, period. I find that in the tuscon you sit higher than the santa fe, but then again, the santa fe really wasn't designed for taller people. At 6' my hair brushes the ceiling from time to time. The thing about the santa fe, it shares the same engine as the tiburon and I just like the lines better.

As for the comparison between the kia and hyundai models... hyundai purchased kia 3 years ago, and much like ford-mercury or chevy-pontiac, many of the models will share parts and chassis. kia Amante - XG350, Kia Magentis - Sonata, Kia Rio - Accent, etc...

As for the shiftronic being useless in the city... Au contraire, mon frere! It comes in handy on those surprise snow days when everyone else is spinning their tires.

I rather enjoyed the driving feeling of the Tuscon, and as you said it feels like a car more than an SUV. I did notice that my head wasnt as close to the ceiling in the Tuscon. Me and the Gf went camping @ tremblant on the weekend, when we were driving uphill her car would struggle to get up and not drop a gear, its situations like this where I see the usefulness of the shiftronic (could have dropped a gear). Anyways, i appreciate all the feedback, obviously she would like a RAV4 (V6 = 270hp) or a CRV, but for the price and quality Hyundai is a huge runner up.

Also, I made a total ass out of myself when I was using the shiftronic getting on the highway and i tried to shift it into 5th gear like 4 times before i realised it was a 4speed tranny.

Have you thought about Subaru impreza? the base model the 4 cyl 2.5i is pretty loaded and is about $23k... awd, a/c, power door locks, keyless entry, pwr windows, etc...

http://www.subaru.ca/

Hyundai has improved a lot since the 90's.. for quality and everything...

Financing will be better at Hyundai... they usually offer low rates or near 0% but the cheapest awd model is $28k for the tuscon... so it's not the cheapest thing out there...

Good friends of ours have the Santa Fe and absolutely love it. Brothers' friend has the Tuscon and absolutely loves it. Neither have had ANY problems whatsoever.

My uncle was in the market for an Acura/Lexus/BMW SUV... and he's got lots of cash, but after test driving the new uber-large Hyundai Veracruz, he bought it and has had no regrets. It was the first Veracruz sold in the Ottawa district (I think from Jenn @ Pathway, if that's the owners/managers' daughter?).

I was blown away by the veracruz when I took it for a spin last weekend. Hyundai has come a LONG LONG way from the cheapo death traps they once were, and IMO are on par with Honda/Toyota in quality. As mentioned earlier, the resale value of Honda/Toyota is probably only because of the inflated initial purchase price to begin with. You pay now, or you pay later, for the reputation, not necessarily the best deal. Best deal right now I think is Hyundai in this segment.

Bang on on the quality and customer satisfaction. Hyundai SUV's and Crossovers sit second in between Toyota and Honda. That's right ABOVE Honda.

Also withe new Hyundai Performance Parts program released as of May this year, they are looking after the aftermarket segment as well, even if only in Canada (the US owners are chomping at the bit over this)

I'd take a real close look at the Toyota Rav4 - V6.

Impressive little thing.. and good fuel effiency to boot.. (v6 is virtually the same as the 4 cyl on gas).
