Modify Fuel Rail Covers (Day 1)

Since this LS1 came out of a Trans Am there are things in the way that don't allow the Corvette Fuel Rail Covers to fit. Things like throttle cable and PCV system.

I had to re-route a bunch of cables, wires and tube. I only got the passenger side done and that alone took over 3 hours.

Here are the cuts I had to make. Keep in mind I have not sanded them smooth yet so they look like ass right now.

Sorry for the crappy cell phone pics...

Passenger Side

1- Cut for the throttle cable bracket...

2- Cut for the throttle cable and PCV tubes...

http://img705.imageshack.us/img705/9271/p1603111625.jpg

After moving everything and making the cuts it snaps into place...

Driver Side

Since my motor is an earlier model LS engine which has two fuel lines going to the rail and these covers are for a Z06 which only has one I had to make a cut for the second line.

After:

http://img848.imageshack.us/img848/1406/p1603111815.jpg

Once I use the dremel to sand it it will look just like the other side.

I still have a bunch of shit to re-route on the drivers side before it even comes close to fitting. I may wait till after the head install since everything is going to be appart and it will be easier to move stuff around.

VALVE COVERS and COIL Brackets

Nothing exciting here. Because the aftermarket heads use a center bolt design and my stock LS1 heads are perimeter bolts I had to get some new valve covers and coil brackets. Picked up some used ones in great condition other than being VERY dirty.

This first pic is after about an hour of cleaning...

After some sanding....

And the final product after painting with some VHT high temp flat black...

INTAKE REMOVAL

I am not going to go into much detail on this and just let the pictures do the talking.

After:

The good news is it only took me 45 minutes to take the intake manifold off. The bad news is I broke the oil sending unit at he back of the motor behind the intake and I also discovered the LS6 intake manifold I bought had the throttle cable mount cut off so I cant mount the throttle cable to the new intake. http://forums.midnightruns.com/images/smilies/fuu.gif

The guy I bought the intake off of took it back no problem as he didnt know the shop did that and I found another LS6 intake locally. Also it looks like KRN from the board is hooking me up with a great price on the oil pressure sending unit.

Water Pump & Power Steering

Drained the coolant and removed the water pump so I could get at the bolts to remove the power steering reservoir. Two of the bolts were a pain to reach and took 20 minutes of slowly wrenching them off. Little things like vavlve covers and rockers/pushrods were also removed.

http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/3701/img2148e.jpg

Passenger Side Head

Most of removing the passenger side head was not bad. The lower head bolts were hard to get to because of the headers in the way but the biggest pain was the bolt behind the head that held the dip stick to it. 3 hours of trying to get one damn bolt off. Sore back, wrist and knees but the damn this is off now.

im jealous of the push rod motors. may have been a bitch to get at some bolts but at least you dont have to worry about properly marking timing chains etc and remove cams and so on. you can literally just unbolt your heads.

Y'know what I like about V8 car enthusiasts? They usually know how to do stuff like change pushrods, rockers, cam, heads etc. Really want to see this thing in person when it's done.

Driver's Side Head

Thanks to a buddy who came to help for a couple of hours today I was able to get the driver's side head off. We had to take the header off to get to all the bolts.

LS6 INTAKE MODIFICATION

You can see that the LS1 intake on the left has a contoured bottom where as the LS6 intake on the right is flat. This creates a problem because there are coolant lines in the valey right inder the intake on the LS1 motor unlike on the LS6.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/1182/ls1onleftls6onright.jpg

There are two solutions to this problem. The first is to buy the coolant lines taht came on LS6 equiped cars. The second solution is to cut off the tabs/grid on the bottom of the LS6 iuntake to make room for the LS1 coolant lines. That is what I did...

Got some good progress done today. A buddy was supposed to come over to help but he was too hung over. LOL

Matte Red LS6 Intake

This took several days of prep, spray and curing. It was a pain in the ass but I think it turned out pretty good.

PRC Stage 2.5 Ported 5.3L Head Install

These went on a lot smoother than I thought they would except for 2 things. It was hard to install one of the bolts due to the fact that it was so long and the brake booster was in the way. The second issue is if anyone has ever installed heads before they know the amount of effort it takes to tighten the bolts. A couple of bolts where room is limited were especially hard. My back is killing...

Now that the heads are on I could finish up tucking the wires and hoses enough to finish modifying the Fuel Rail covers. After some more trimming and sanding I got them to fit.

Next is to get the Corvette letters filled and paint the covers black.

Thanks. Car is 99% done. Only have the fuel rail covers to finish up and need the proper coil brackets so I can mount them properly. The car feels strong with the new heads and drives like a dream now that is was tuned by Arun. Can't wait to be able to say it is finally 100% done.

EvilDeadFan

I should reclarify. Not so soon after recently getting it 99% done.
I remember Jay saying the Camaro was sold also because it was a manual.

NTIMD8
05-31-2011, 10:12 AM
I dont think I am "that" bad with selling cars I build. The Camaro was a whole bunch of issues causing me to want to sell it once it was up and running. The Lightning was the gas costs. I would like to keep this one but as I said I really want a Porsche Turbo. I just don't think Canada has the market for me to sell this car for what it is worth so all of this is moot anyway. So the only option is for me to keep this AND buy a Porsche. Let me run this by the wife. If you guys don't hear back from me for a few days it is because I am not out of the hospital yet.

Just getting the final touches done. The car is 99% complete now.

I got the fuel reail covers back from paint. The "CORVETTE" lettering was filled in and got them painted golss black. I am thinking I may pinstripe the lines and 5.7L is yellow for some contrast but not sure.
