So heres my story.

My buddy's white truck has those little surface rust dots on the body pannels around the wheels. I used to detail cars back in the days at Carling motors and IIRC, I didnt need to buff the truck...I used a product.. could it have been paint thinner? This was a long while ago and cant remember..

Either way.. he offered to give me 80$ to buff his whole F-150 Lariat Full Size and I explained to him that normally guys would charge up to 5 or 6 times more for a detail on his truck... I dont think he realized how much work goes into a job like this.. I dont want his cash, nor do I want to spend my whole weekend detailing his truck.

What do you guys use to get the spots off?

Clay bar or sand paper.

It's called rail dust. Use a clay bar.

Dont you have to buff right after using a clay bar? My whole point was that my buddy was to Jewish to pay a proper price to get it done and IIRC we were using a liquid product to dissolve the stains.

No. Clay then wax. Unless you planned on polishing first.

You don't have to buff anything. I clay once or twice a year, followed by some wax. Both my trucks had bad rail dust, most vehicles have them but you don't notice it on darker coloured vehicles.

Have fun claying an entire truck.

Ask GTPaul what he uses on rims, apparently it dissolves iron and might work on rail dust.

Thanks Jza.

Ill let him do it..

He called me up asking if I still can detail a vehicle... This is how it went :

Me " Yeah..sure..why not "

Him " How long are you gonna take ? "

Me " 8-12 hours maybe "

Him " Soo.. like.. what if I give you 80$? and can you ask martin for his buffer and compounds?"

Me " Buddy.. you barely call me every 3 months..You Have to ask around to find my number which I havent changed for the last 6 years and you want me to spend my weekend detailing your truck for 7$ an hour? and you expect me to borrow a buffer and the compunds from another friend of mine?"

Him " Well...Yeah?"

Me " BRB.. I have to post on Redliners about this and find you a cheaper way you can do yourself"

Prepay? The dude would pay me tonight if I asked.. I already have a truck.. And ill most likely spend 10-12 hours detailing that whole F-150... I make around 80$ in 3 hours of work on my regular job.. I usually never get a side job unless it pays me 200$ and up cash a day..Unless youre my buddy and I know I can count on you when I need your help for something as well.. Not gonna waste a weekend on the dudes truck for 80$ thats for sure..Im just looking for an easier way for him to get this done without having to detail the whole thing.

When it comes to side jobs I don't get out of bed for less than $400/day.

These small spots of rust are caused by your brakes. with metallic brake pads the pieces of metal in the pad heat up float away on to your paint and burn a hole in the clear coat. the most common way of removal like everyone is saying is a time consuming buff, or clay bar. Like JZA was saying people like GTPAUL or us here at Extreme Autocare do have a liquid used on rims for removing build up and stains, its not the best thing for your paint but it does remove these spots in seconds. If your buddies annoying you as it is i may consider this product.

There are products for wheels and paint. Most shops use a product which is Oxalic Acid which will help remove fall out and brake dust. This can discolour certain trim.
I use IronX Liquid (not gel) in a spray bottle with 2:1 ratio of water. Spray on let it sit, and it starts to disolve the iron particles. It's gentler and does the trick. You will need to re-apply or use a sponge to gently rub the iron free.
Claybar is your alternative but it takes forever and is better suited for random contamination like paint overspray.

That being said, it is usually needed to polish after only to bring back the shine and dullness from any rubbing. (but thats just me)
I also use Sonax Full Effect on heavily contaminated wheels, this is a gel so it sticks while it works.

^^ I used this stuff to clean the inside of my gas tank. Took a couple days of soaking to do the entire 20L tank with 3L of evapo rust. Seems pretty good. Didnt really get any on the paint but id imagine if you just use a soaked paper towel covered with plastic for 20 mins or so you should be good.

Didnt really work as well as the bottle says but it did in fact work. Good reviews on the internet too.
