wondering, if anyone could tell me the shop rate for a timing belt on a 1979 242 dl b21a, volvo, timing belt re and re.

soo the timing was off on my car then i snapped the belt. soo i got a belt for 25 bucks, threw in my adjustable camgear in for fun, and got (vr6turbo) to help me take off the crank too put the new belt on for 60 bucks, soo all in all i spent 85 bucks for a re and re timing belt on my time off in under 3 hours.

is this good or could it be done quicker at the dealer/shop?

anyone know the shop rate.

hah no worrys, i heard bout your shit happening, did you find out if its a non interferance engine. becuase you might have bent valves from the pistons hitting the valves if you dont.? meaning head work $$$$

For the toyota they will charge you 8 hours most likely. Me and my buddy did it in about 6 in my celica, and you know a garage will always way overcharge,

i still wanna see how much i saved,

im trying too prove a point to a family member that thinks it was a waste of money and time. i figure doing my own oil change was a waiste but no the timing belt.

Yeah, i'm not too sure about the engine being non-interference or not...

Dad wondered if it might be the timing belt when I called him... Guy with the tow-truck said he THINKS that might be the problem (tried starting it for him) but he said not to quote him on it...

I know the 7th Gen Celica's had alot of issues with timing belts and bent valves... Haven't really heard of any issues with the 5th Gen though...

I didn't hear any knocking or have any idication that anything was wrong... simply parked my car and seen a better spot... decided to go to the other spot, was pretty much just idling over to the spot, maybe doing about 2-3 km/h if that and the car died on me... I didn't really even notice it shut off until I went to give it some gas and it didn't move... Tried to start it and all I get from it is a whirring noise....

Depending on what the actual problem is, and how much it would cost to fix it, it might almost be time to swap in the 3SGTE lol

If you want to know if an engine is an interference engine or not go here:

Your engine type may be non interference, but that doesn't mean your particular example is. The GM 3.4 DOHC is supposed to be a non interference engine. I've seen a couple with some nasty damage (not too extreme but really expensive.)

FYI the Crappy Tire in CP charges 84.00/ hour for labour. So you are already just a third of what it would cost for your 3 hours work.

I thought the 3.4 was interference fit? It could be that it had aftermarket higher lift cams, no?

I checked that site out... but where/how do I determine if it is interference or not?

hey I got a 91 celica GT 5S-FE and I went to the shop they checked the book said non-interferrence....because apparently I got a oil leak in my head gasket and its dripping on the back of my engine and my timing belt so he told me if the timing belt ends up snapping I should be alright.

If you wanna double check...I jsut run a google search saying "5S-FE non-interference"

When the car turns over does it sound like it normally would?

Or does the starter spin basically freely as if the spark plugs were out?

If your timing belt snapped, or your cam(s) jumped MAJORLY they would not be closing and there would be no compression. You'd just be spinning the buttom end/pistons freely...

If there's compression (it sounds normal etc) then it's probably something iginition/fuel related.

if valves are open at the wrong time can;t your piston come up and hit them thus causing major dammage?

Hmm, strange that link isn't the right one. Try this one:

As far as a good Shop goes F150, i'd call Getty Automotive. Great shop and he knows Volvo's really well.
