Yes you need insurance for a trip permit. Some insurance companies will not insure an older vehicle unless it has a valid safety, others will give you insurance regardless.

if it was already in your name and safetied prior or on the road from who ever you bought it from you can get a ten day and you have 15 days from date of purchase to notify your insurance company of the change assuming you already have a policy

This isn't the first time I've heard about this 15 day rule, I'd love for someone to be able to verify 100% that, that is correct. (been told different by police when I asked)

My insurance gives me 10 days of coverage without telling them from date of purchase. Thats why you dont need an insurance slip for that vehicle, any will do just to prove you have insurance. But best way to verify, is call your insurance.

What if you get pulled over and have no proof of insurance on the car your driving? This is essentially what I curious about, I asked a few cops once before I was going to take a car out (weekend, ins was closed) and was told that if I didn't have a pink slip for that car that it's a 5k fine for driving without insurance.
Just curious, it's never been an issue but a quote from the HTA or something would be cool.

You will get a fine, but if you can prove to them that you had insurance at the time of the stop you're okay. Went through this 2 years ago and all I did was go from my house to the store and back. Got pulled over for "being to low" and in the end he let me go on everything except for my insurance where I got a court date on the spot. Thankfully he didn't have my car towed on the spot.
In the end, 5k fine + about 1k victim surcharges on top of that + the cost of a lawyer. IMHO it's worth waiting the couple of days until your broker opens. (obviously).

Why not just call your insurance?
