View Full Version : Why could my GSR not have held on for another week?

07-10-2007, 02:04 PM
Ok, so everyone has probably seen my GSR setup where I took a GSR I picked up for cheap with a spun rod bearing and bad crank, I threw in a spare LS crank, custom machined some pistons and used LS rods. It was a low buck build as I wanted to forge it and start running major boost. I beat on the engine very hard for a year. Set the rev limiter to 8250. I figured it was fairly strong until now. Now I'm on vacation 1500km away and guess what?

Seems that those LS rods just aren't that strong. Could have been 15h of 4500RPM getting here... Spun a bearing and the crank is screwed. Called some scrapyards and most want well over a grand for an LS... Wow. Crappy way to go on vacation :( Better news is that I've found an LS for 4 bills and will hopefully drive to Halifax to pick it up tomorrow. Boo for doing engine swaps in dad's driveway.

Sorry to hear that Michael - where are you at the moment?

ahh that really sucks. LS rods and cranks just cant withold the 8200 redline abuse that the gsr's give.

Rods yes, cranks no. I've spun many LS cranks well over 9 with no problems (except my own of course, but that ended up being oil starvation).
The rods though are noticeably smaller with smaller hardware.

I'm in Wolfville NS at my parent's place so at least it didn't leave me in butfucknowhere NB or something.

I think the trouble is not really the LS rods and not really the crank, it's the combination of the two. The extra 3mm of stroke knocks the RS ratio down a little and increases the piston speeds enough that they finally decided to give up the ghost. I know people who have raced a season with a stock LS bottom end at 9500 RPM without breaking them but the mileage and history of these rods is unknown. We'll just stick this in the not reliable category. Let's not forget it did withstand almost a year of my beating on it every day plus 15h of 4400RPM travelling here... I'll post pics when I can.

Damn that makes for a shitty trip. But Pierre (ProtegePower) had a better story behind his blown engine while travelling out west. How it was repaired is even funnier!

I want to hear this!

Ok please do tell. I haven't talked to Pierre for a couple of years.

BTW I installed an LS and it got me home in the wee hours of the morning. Man it has no power...

Is that guy even alive?

Pierre is still alive.

Coles notes:
- He travelled to Vancouver in his 89 Civic DX with his girlfriend
- During a storm, she drove through a big puddle, almost stalled it but got out without incident
- he decides to find a flooded parking lot and show her how to power through the water
- he hydrolocks it in the middle of nowhere
- he has limited funds, has no tools
- he goes on the local radio asking for help
- a local mechanic offers to do the work for free
- the owner of the shop won't allow the work to be done for free
- the mechanic gets fired
- the mechanic does the work at his home
- Pierre goes back on the radio to thank the mechanic and rip a new one to the shop owner
- shop owner rehires the mechanic.

And that's how Pierre does it!

Holy crap! That could be a made-for-tv movie! Just pimp out the car, throw in some romantic turmoil, and have some kind of drug running thing going on and you're good.

my question is .. how was he able to get on the radio to begin with?

Moral to each story

a) don't rev your LS rods to 8250 on a daily basis because they will only last a year.

b) don't drive through deep puddles trying to show how not to blow things up.
