Just need one loosened for me so that I can put my last winter tire on.

Anyone have a tool for this or should I just take it to a shop?

fun times for you!

can you lock a large set of vice grips on the lug or is the lug sunk in the rim?

Negatory.

Vice grips just spin around. They can't grip anything.

Maybe a pipe-wrench if it's sticking out at all? Heating it up with a propane torch might expand it enough that it losens its grip on the stud, but it's hard to say. Be ready with some water or an extinguisher just in case.

or take a file or grinder and make 2 flat spots on either side of the lug so vice grips dont spin

could do that, but odds are you will butcher the rim, best thing to do is take it to a shop and have them weld a big bar to the lug then just crank it off. Or weld a socket to it or tube or something.

hammer on a socket one size too small.

I bought bolt removers from Sears to do the exact same thing. The only thing is that I needed huge leverage to get the suceker off.

The bolt remover looks like a standard socket but the inside has indents to grab at the rounded parts. Works awesome. If you're in Orleans I can help out.

as 97gst said, just get a socket that's slightly too small and hammer it on. use a 12 point socket.

you'll never grab it with visegrips, the metal of the locknut is a very hard steel. the socket stretches onto it.

Tom, I know i know, bring it to a shop, but I just need the one damn lug nut loosened as you very well know. Hoping to get it done quick and easy without a shop.

As for the others, I should have mentioned its the type of lug nut that you stick your "tool" in :D

The inside of the nut is now a perfect circle thanks to Tom and I :D

Are these the cheap tunner style with a hex or three sided key? If so, there very easy to split with a chisel, or pound a larger hex drive into it, it will either grab so you can turn it, or split down the side.
You love working on cars eh?
