View Full Version : Paint Vs Powdercoating?

So after a week of sandblasting parts (Valve cover, radiator fan shroud, bracket, etc...) now I need to move onto the next step.
Would it be better to paint these parts or have them powdercoated?
If I bring my sandblasted parts into RLD to have them powdercoat they'll accept them sandblasted? (I don't know if that's proper prep before powdercoat or if it just creates more work)

You can powdercoat yourself and save tons of money

I would just buy nice paint, and prep them and paint them well. Unless you are concerned with heat, then I would look into either coatings things on your own or sending it out.
RLD doesn't put out a very nice product IMO.

Thanks,
What's the next step towards paint after sandblasting? Would it just be primer?

I've already tackled one big tool upgrade (80 gallon air compressor) I don't have the time to pursue getting an oven and powder gun and charger.
Looks like it will be RLD or paint. I have a paint gun and just would need advice on what kind of paint to buy. Also the what prep involved after a part has been sand blasted.

Depends on what it looked like before it went in. If they had to clean and prep it then that's a big chunk of change.
Also, anodizing is different from powdercoating. Someone will correct me here but I think that's only a treatment available to aluminum.

the prep after sandblasting is pretty simple... you gas it in the oven for about 30 mins, then spray it down with acetone to remove any contaminants...
if youre not in a huge rush, ill lend you my powder gun when im in ottawa again.. its really simple.... all youll have to do is find a free oven on used otttawa, then throw it out when your done...
as for anodizing, theres powders that mock anodizing..

Hey thanks, I was looking for you to reply here.
I've already got my old basement wired up to it's max! For the small box of parts I have that need coverage I think I'll either paint myself with the paint gun and good paint or get them over to RLD. I'm leaning towards the paint I think with the exception of the little valve cover.
if youre going to take them in, make sure youve given them a bath in solvents after blasting... its the best you can do to prepare for them... everything else you need an oven for... its not hard to do the rest yourself, just make sure you have a good inline air dryer...

Just so you guys know.....a friend of mine brought a part in to have "powdercoated" by a guy who i think uses the Eastwood kit.....we sprayed the "powdercoated" part after doing some mods with brake cleaner & its all coming off.
Do it once, do it right, bring it somewhere reputable.

he must not have gassed/cleaned it.. this is a common problem when this step is skipped...

for an oven if its just small parts why not just use a toaster oven??
nice and cheap
toaster ovens have trouble maintaing a consistent temperature...

for the cost involved just paint it.
i painted two honda valve covers over a year ago.
both still look perfect, no signs of flaking.
i used plain old krylon spray paint.

Thought of that but it would be a shame after how much time I've spent on this to not give it a proper finish.

Yeah I brought my B18b valve cover in as a total mess (I painted it with plasticote 2-step anodize it and it started cracking and peeling after about 2 months). They charged me $200, not $300. Steve, lay off the pot. I haven't picked it up yet but I'll try to post some pics when I get it!

I'm in the process of painting a frame for a quad. Its a bitch to do because of the angles, but the paint is turning out nicely. I should be powdercoating it for durability, but i'm using a few more coats of paint so we will see how it turns out.

Are you using your paint gun or rattle cans?

Rattle cans wint ceramic clear coat. It held up well. Quad is gone. Still looked good after few hours of riding though. Key is to have the proper primer.

Anodizing is generally done only to aluminum, but I have had some titanium parts that I made anodized as well.
Anodizing is cheap to do. If someone paid $300 to get a valve cover done they got totaly ripped off, it should of cost more like $30. If RLD did it, it probably was powder coated to look like anodizing. Anodizing is not very durable unless you get it hard anodized and even then it can fade or change colour over time.
