well just thought ide post some pics, if i hadnt replaced the filter and fluid and cleaned the pan, ide be in the tranny replacement club by 200000km, 3k to 5k +labor if you have an audi.

setup

pan pulled, new filter bolted in
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y89/botttt/A4transfluidandfilter020.jpg

my pan with 1/2 cm deep tar like sludge all over the bottom, i should have taken a pic of the old filter while it was still mounted, it had snot like tar hanging from it, the pan as you see it has been vertical for 20 minutes or so, there is no standing oil, only thick black and whitish tar. the actual fluid was like thick black ink (suppose to be golden/clear) and the old filters plastic back is sucked in concave style, i'll take pics of that later, im going to cut it open, but heres the pan

heres the weak ass magnets in the pan, they had some fine debris on them but i would say a normal amount for 168000km, you can get an idea of thick and dark the sludge was on the paper towel

and finally heres the pan after i cleaned it, installed a new gasket and replaced the factory magnets with neodymium magnets so i can now attract semi metallic/magnetic wear components

i'll update this thread with pics of the old sucked in filter when i cut it open

unfortunately you still have liters of old tranny fluid in your torque converter thats is gonna mix in with the new stuff.

yup your exactly right, i was only able to get 6.5 liters in, total capacity is 9L.

but i have better magnets now for debris+6.5L new fluid and i have a new filter now that doesnt produce cavitation or suck its backing in because of how plugged it is, and also now there is no slugge left to plug up my new filter, this process is very worth while if your dealing with this type of car, that is, unless you have waited too long.

i figured 2-3L left over is no big deal, besides this audi lifetime fluid expires 3 years after the date of manufacture, so i will change it again in a few years

i dont know if it would help get any more fluid out next time but maybe if you used a pump like g-pwr used to suck the oil out of his smart, and connected it to a tranny line you could get some more fluid out of the cooler/converter/pump

i didnt even think about the tranny cooler, i probably could of got another liter out of the lines and cooler itself. if the in/out bungs on the tranny are accessible, i'll disconnect them next time and blow some air through, and maybe try to siphon out of the tranny bungs themselves, thanks man

I have never seem them fail, my old man used them for years for his pickup truck and station wagon back in the day.

and that audi is about 1/2 the weight.

one of the ford master techs at my shop the way he does a trans flush, is he pulls a cooler line, and lets all the fluid pumpout while the engine is running. as soon as it starts the spit, he turns the vehicle off. pulls the pan. gets the dirty work done. throws in roughly 6-8 litres. then starts the engine again, and tops off the rest of the fluid..

when i do a flush, i use a fancy machine that makes the job a litle more cleaner 8) but it pretty much does the same thing. while the engine runs the whole time. you fill up the machine with the desiered new fluid. then hook it up to the cooler lines. it sucks all the old stuff out. then when its done, turn the car off, get the dirty stuff done, then flick the switch and then start the vehicle. while it puts the new stuff in..

even with no fluid in the trans for the little bit of time its running, its "alright" .. but dont neglect the machine. while you pump out the fluid, or you WILL have problems lol
