View Full Version : High-Heat Liquid Paint or Cermakrome Powder-Coating?

I'm looking into painting/coating my turbo's hot-side, manifold and downpipe. Clearly heat transfer is important, but so is cost.
The original plan was to have everything Cermakromed over at RLD (to match my valve cover), but funds and the fact that I'd have to disassemble the turbo to have them coat the Hot Side is really not appealing to me (at least over $300). Also, the fact that my parts would be gone for ~2 weeks doesn't help.
My other option is to simply paint the components with VHT/Duplicolor extreme heat paint (1500F) myself, which costs a hell of a lot less ($40) and saves me the trouble of having to disassemble the turbo itself. Of course the time I'd take to prep/paint is still a factor, but that can all be done on a Saturday. Which is a lot better than waiting 2 weeks.
Thoughts?

I honestly have no idea, but I would be amazed if the paint would stand up to 1500degrees getting splashed with water when driving through a puddle...

My downpipe was done with high temp paint and wrapped in heat wrap. The only parts that haven't stood up to the temp are where it connects to the silicone clamp. Everywhere else looks like the day I painted it.
My manifold cover was also done with the duplicolor high temp stuff (not the 1500, but the next one down). The paint hasn't chipped or anything, but the only complaint is that it's a bit discolored on the top half. I don't think I waited long enough after painting though so that might have something to do with it.

What colour are you looking for? Are you trying to keep the sruface rust off it? Or looking for pretty?
I used something designed for headers, it was like a paste that kept the cast look. Worked well, never came off, but a turbo hot side would be hotter than a set of headers I guess :?

I'm not really worried about the discoloration as I'd be going with their aluminum or flat black color. I'm more worried about flaking/quality and heat dissipation.
youll still have to sandblast the turbo if you want the paintjob to last.... in which case youll still have to disassemble the turbo. the cermakrome or other ceramic coatings will likely hold up 10x longer than the paint.

Wrap it or coat it, painting it will look good, but no where near the same heat protection.

what about this nifty stuff?

or this kit?

I'd only use the wrap on the downpipe, but will the silicon coating make a nice improvement compared to regular high-heat paint on the turbo/manifold?
i dont think any of the paints will hold up well to the heat... as for the header wrap.. its pretty much always a good idea...
The paints do hold up to the heat. Have done it successfully on 500whp turbo manifolds. It won't make a lick of difference on the heat problem. Header wrap and that silicone spray is the key with those. Takes a long time to do neatly and be prepared for some sore itchy hands.

Sounds good. Looks like I'll be ordering that kit then.
Thanks fellas!

I stock the DEI turbo kits, so you can check it out when you pick up your rims.

Just a FYI....
I painted the center section of the turbos with VHT high heat 1500* paint......its still on there 2 yrs later. I changed the exhaust housings last season part way through it, and i ended up painting them with the VHT stuff as well, still there. These sucks have seen 1400* EGT quite often :D
Go for it...cheap & it works.....Cermakrome looks much better though

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna be going this route along with using some of the DEI products mentioned above. Even though my CF hood is vented, I'm still really worried about the temps in the engine bay, especially with the amount of power the engine will be producing.
One step at a time I guess!

Bro all my stuff is under a stock T/A hood...no cowl, no vents, nothing
no cooling problems either......the paint works good for what it is

Dan, let me know if you decide to just spray the silicone on the manifold or not, i really need to do something about mine since its kinda off color, im not looking for anything fancy, just something that looks nice when i open the hood.

Agreed, but you're running either a stock or aftermarket rad right? I'm forced to use a 1/2 sized, dual core rad which isn't helping anything out.
I'll be researching more into the DEI/Paint stuff. Hopefully it gets warm soon so I can start working on this!

Im actually running a rad thats smaller than stock (16"x31") but you're right, it is an aftermarket 2 core & its aluminum.
Couldnt do anything to get around the smaller rad?

No sir. Engine bay space is what I like to call "not fucking there!". Good times I say, good times.

At this time, I've only seen CT keep VHT products in stock. Lots of weird colours like yellow and green too. :?
