    Default Subaru BRZ STI

A characteristically un-Subaru Subaru, the BRZ STI concept is our first look at the upcoming production sports car, which was co-developed with Toyota.
Painted in typical WR Blue Pearl (the Subie fanboys wouldn’t have it any other way), as a concept, and an STI concept, it’s a wilder looking version of what we’ll expect from the street car that will bow at the upcoming Tokyo Motor Show.
With a boxer engine that’s low down and front-mid-mounted, the car’s center of gravity is already excellent. This concept improves on that, however, with a carbon fiber roof. Until now all the Toyota FT-86 concepts have sported 17-inch wheels, although this car gets 18s, plus a massive rear spoiler and aggressive front splitter.
Subaru will hold a press conference later today to “officially” announce the car. Stay tuned to see if they release any new details then.

Hope they make it turbo and AWD. If not, it's a fail.

Turbo - maybe one day (Force induction is defnitly in the works)

    AWD- Never

The car is not designed to be AWD, the engine sits too far back for the usual Subaru AWD set-up.

the engine is longitudinal and it would have to be transverse to accomodate a x-case and front axles. highly unlikely, but you never know.

Making this car AWD would be a complete flop. Firstly, the whole point of the project was to make a proper sports car. That meant handling, power, feel, etc... Unfortunately power got put on the back burner, but the benefits on it's handling abilities far outweigh the acceleration issues. Secondly, if they had made this AWD, they would simply be splitting their own market. People would have to choose between the BRZ STI, and the WRX STI. This wouldn't make Subaru any more money. (Toyota might have benefited from a Subie AWD system though). Designing it as an FR car pulls in people who (like me) prefer the Engine in the Front, Power at the Rear. That is something that Subaru had missing in it's lineup. Also, Toyota has been missing the same thing since they discontinued the Supra.

if anything, forced induction should be in the works. which I imagine there is already lots of aftermarket support for this platform. I can't foresee the manufacturer going turbo inside of the first 2-3 years of this 1st generation. it would render the current model year feeble to a FI model.

what I don't understand is why on god's green earth didn't they set the bar a little higher for horse power from the beginning???

Why are you posting an article from 2011? With all the rumours of an STi version of this thing floating around, you couldn't find a more recent/relevant article? Good to see local boy Colum doing so well though

Most recent news is Non-Turbo. +20-30 HP

    - More Free Flowing Exhaust
    - More Aggressive Intake
    - More Aggressive ECU Tuning
    - More Aggressive Brakes
    - Stiffer Suspension

Definitely looking forward to it as a replacement for the soon-to-die Miata.

^ Enjoying life, doing what he likes... who knows, and why does it matter? You need to be less concerned with other peoples lives.

Colum is the editor in chief of Autoguide. I'd say that's pretty well. Didn't realize article was from 2011 though my bad.
